Meet Geraldine

Hi I’m Hazel and this is my first ever Blog! It’s about me (which sounds a bit egotistical doesn’t it but bear with me) and in particular about my close friend, Geraldine. Actually I haven’t known Geraldine very long, well I suppose I have, but for years I tried to ignore her, because I didn’t like her. When she wouldn’t let me ignore her anymore and forced me to acknowledge her, I hated her. I thought she was a mean bully who made my life a misery and was out to scare me and hurt me.

But it turns out she’s always been on my side. She had been trying desperately for years to get my attention because all she wants is to look after me and keep me safe. Unfortunately she has a rather dramatic and over-the-top way of doing it. Like giving me have panic attacks. Like squashing my chest so tightly I feel like I can’t breathe.

Geraldine is my Anxiety. And I’m finally learning to accept her, listen to her and stop fighting her.

So this blog is a way of getting my thoughts out, but mostly I hope it might help others going through something similar. I want you to know you’re not alone. And maybe we can help each other and spread the word that mental health problems are nothing to be ashamed of.

I’ll be sharing what’s going on with me – the good days and the crappy ones – things I’ve found helpful, quotes or images I love.

Oh and I should probably say why the name ‘Geraldine’.  Apparently kids with anxiety are encouraged to give it a name to help them distance their anxiety from themselves and as I figured that far too often I feel like a small 5 year old child in a 40 year old body, then if it works for them… I chose Geraldine after the Peter Kaye character (if you haven’t seen it, do, it’s tears down your cheeks hilarious) so whenever I think about my anxiety I don’t take it too seriously.

I hope you enjoy reading. Xx
